Um, I thought CBS rejected the commercial for that gay dating site. Apparently, I was wrong. It’s either that, or we know what jinxed Matt Stover on his missed field goal.
I kid, I kid.

No, that wasn’t a anonymous cell phone image posted on a random Saints forum somewhere. Instead, you can thank Getty Images for the picture, which captured a particularly exuberant Saints fan and her obvious desire to expose her boobs. And then they put the image on perhaps the popular sports site on the Internet — Yahoo Sports — making sure it wouldn’t go unnoticed.

And it didn’t.

Here’s hoping Miss Saints Boobs Fan made it home OK. Oh, and to the bloggers making fun of her with “Do No Want” type of comments, please. Just stop. If you were a Saints fan, in the same crowd, you would’ve done the same thing, if not tried to bogart in on SBF’s fun. Don’t lie. It’s unbecoming.

I, for one, admire her exuberance, among other things; although, I’m left wondering if she received any beads for her celebratory exposure?

While we were treated to an enjoyable game, unfortunately, the other reason people tune into Super Bowl Sunday, the commercials, were lacking. Lately, the attempts to be humorous fall flat. This includes such mainstays like Budweiser and Coca-Cola.

Admittedly, while I did name Budweiser, their “Bud Light House” commercial was kind of cute, but that’s it, and from a company responsible for the Bud Bowl, I guess I expected more. There were, however, a few that stood out and thanks to the power of YouTube, we can enjoy them together.

If you can’t tell by the lead image, Google’s commercial was one of my favorites. Simple, effective, and let’s be honest here, it was deadly accurate. How many of you, on a day-to-day basis, conduct similar types of searches? Ones that build on previous queries? Sometimes, just being who you are is all you need.

Any commercial that leverages the “slug bug” era is fine by me. Plus, anytime an effective Stevie Wonder is featured, I’m sold.

Emerald Nuts has long been a quirky commercial producer, and thankfully, their partnership with Pop Secret did not alter their style. Perhaps I’m just a silly person, but the guy “jumping” through the hoop had me laughing out loud. Yeah, I’m just silly… But it was awesomer, more so than most offerings, anyway.

Even though Career Builder’s commercial started a trend of “men in their underwear” approach to marketing, it was still humorous, and that’s A LOT more than I can say for things like “Mini Kiss,” Bud Light’s “Stranded” commercial (sorry, not all of us are on the Lost bandwagon), and any hokey salaciousness from GoDaddy.

That’s it. That’s the list. Four commercials. Out of the untold number we were subjected to, only four were Super Bowl-worthy. Not a good percentage if you ask me. And you didn’t.

Update:

Oh, damn. I COMPLETELY forgot about Betty White, which should be a fine-able offense.

My love affair with Betty White has long since been out, but damn. I’d marry that woman.

Drew Brees is your Super Bowl MVP, and rightfully so. The quarterback clinic he put on from the second quarter on was one for the ages. After missing on four passes in the first quarter, Brees only had three more incomplete passes for the rest of the game. Because of that, Brees got to tell the world he and his family are going to Disney World, a benefit of being the Super Bowl MVP. While Brees’ MVP resume is full of qualifiers — the two-point conversion, for one — it was a Saints defender who had the game’s MVP*.

I’m talking about Tracy Porter, of course, and his game-deciding pick-six interception of Peyton Manning. To put it bluntly, it was a thing of football beauty, regardless who you root for.

While I have no doubt Colts fans don’t want to acknowledge just how great Porter’s play was, but deep down inside, even they know it’s true.

In other news, how about Porter’s bad-ass haircut? They say the source of Sampson’s strength was his long locks of hair. In regards to Porter, while his ‘hair” was indeed short — in fact, bald, save for the designs –the creativity on display (the Super Dome, the Lombardi Trophy) looks very strength-building. At least to me.

*Most Valuable Play

Yeah, the Super Bowl’s this weekend — as is my birthday — and what better way to start the weekend than revisiting the only story the media circus even bothered with this past week: Dwight Freeney’s ankle. According to Peter King’s Twitter, Freeney didn’t practice today, after much speculation otherwise. What does this mean? Who knows, however, if there’s not a Vegas betting line for whether or not Freeney plays, I’ll be impressed. As it is, I’m still expecting to see him for at least one down.

While a lot of people have been bitching about the focus on perhaps the most famous NFL ankle ever, it’s nice to see the media fixate on something that actually impacts the game instead of boring-ass special interest tripe.

Of course, considering just how much Freeney’s injury impacts the betting lines, among other things monetarily related, it’s shouldn’t be too surprising.

Other things of note:

More information about the Puppy Bowl, perhaps the best non-football form of Super Bowl entertainment out there, from a good friend of mine. If you are a fan, check it out.

OK. Who would win a Marvel versus DC Super Bowl?

Considering the teams, I’m going Marvel 2045, DC 2038.

My dark horse MVP is Spider-Man and his 145 catches for 2000 yards and 100 touchdowns. I’m sorry, but Peter Parker and his radioactive spider bite would absolutely destroy the DC secondary (Deathstroke the Terminator and The Gentleman Ghost at DB, Sinestro and Gorilla Grodd at the safety positions).

In fact, someone suggested they’d watch this over the NFL’s Super Bowl and I have to say, I’m inclined to agree.

For some reason, this captivated me:

Maybe it’s the reverberated “Sunday-ay-ay.” Say what you will, but I doubt VERY seriously your SB party is going to have such an awesome spread of food. Not even close. Although, you’ll probably have alcohol. We’ll call it a “push.”

And because we’re all about equal time, there’s this gem from the Raging Grannies, a group who are responding to the Tebow ad kerfuffle; an ad, mind you, that hasn’t even aired yet. Granted, their vitriol is aimed at CBS, but still, I’m already tired of it and again, it hasn’t even aired yet.

Good times. Now, for some eye-bleach:

As I was saying, equal time, and all that.

Now for the game: You’ve heard it all; the analysis, the breakdown, Freeney’s ankle, Peyton’s greatness, Drew Brees’ awesomeness, all of it. With that in mind, all week, I’ve been thinking the Colts and feeling the Saints. Head or heart? For this one, I think I’ll go with the heart:

Saints – 31
Colts – 28

MVP – Breesus. Drew Breesus.

The undeniable star of Super Bowl XLIV’s media whirlwind has been Dwight Freeney and his ankle. Yes, the biggest game the NFL has, featuring arguably the two best quarterbacks in the NFL, and a defensive end and his joint connecting foot to leg is outshining it all. It helps that Freeney’s a good interview and is quite willing to offer more than just your standard, pat answers. However, if not for his damaged ankle, he’d be another cog in the wheel that is the overwhelming crush that is Super Bowl media day.

Speaking of damaged goods, apparently, Freeney’s ankle sounds like it’s doing better.

Does this mean he’s playing? Of course, the Colts won’t say, but there are even rumors of Freeney testing his ankle in the Colts’ Friday practice. Whatever the case, Freeney did not practice in today’s session.

With that in mind, do the Colts take a chance with a less-than-100-percent Freeney, or completely alter the way they’ll attack the Saints from the line of scrimmage? Of course, most of us are expecting to see him go at least one defensive possession, and naturally, tomorrow’s results will give us a better gauge. With all the talk of Freeney and his damaged ankle, I’m fully expecting Robert Mathis to have one of those MVP/Reggie White-against-the-Patriots kind of game.

It would only make sense.

We’ve discussed a number of various Super Bowl shenanigans people get into. Highlights include self-vasectomies, human toilets, or attractive females offering their company via an Internet auction. Now, one of the best offensive football players of the modern era — Barry Sanders — wants to get in on the action as well. And hey, since he never made it to the Super Bowl, perhaps offering himself as a guest is the next best thing.

Yes, you can bid on the opportunity, via eBay, to have Barry Sanders attend your Super Bowl shindig, if that’s your thing.

Update:
Unfortunately, you only have a few minutes to outbid the current leading amount, which stands at over $14,000. Benefits go to charity and all that good jazz, but I must say, it’s weird to see such a introverted individual do something so outgoing. Hell, you never know. Maybe he’ll be comfortable enough at your party to bust out some dance moves he never used during his all-to-brief career.

Update 2:
The winning bid for Sanders’ company? $17,000.

For 17 grand, I sure hope the greatness does indeed taste great.

Whether it’s basketball or football, it’s always a good time when Pitt and West Virginia get together. There’s a genuine affection between the two fanbases, one that extends beyond mere physical activity. Um, yeah. About that. I mean, the rivalry is called the “Backyard Brawl” for goodness’ sake. To say there’s no love lost would be understating things. The latest edition of the Backyard Brawl saw the Panthers traveling to West Virginia, and if you’re a fan of unruly student fans throwing things at opposing coaching staffs, this game was for you.

It got so bad, Bob Huggins had to step in and admonish the crowd:

The reason I put quotation marks around the word “law” in the title has to do with the effect the words of WVU coach Bob Huggins did to calm the frenzied masses; that is, none. Earlier in the game, some ‘Eers fans threw some debris on the playing floor, prompting the response from Huggins we see in the video. Needless to say, they were about as effective as trying to plug a dike with your finger. Fast forward to later in the game:

See? As effective as an umbrella against a nuclear missle. You stay classy, West Virginia fans. The world would be a much a different place if you ever changed.

Nothing goes with Super Bowl football quite like mega-expensive commercials that feature a level of “cutting loose” from these ad departments we don’t normally get to enjoy. Take, for instance, this offering from Tru Tv featuring Troy Polamalu — who, incidentally, has appeared in more commercials than football games this year. Polamalu and his hair star as a whacked-out version of Punxsutawney Phil (have fun spelling that without copy and paste). The results are a lot more humorous than the description would lead you to believe.

I think what sold it for me was Punxsutawney Polamalu’s quasi-Heisman pose when the six more weeks of football decree is given. It’s the little things, folks.

Yes, the Providence Friars got beat by Syracuse, one of the best teams in the country, last night, but their trip to the Carrier Dome wasn’t without merit — if highlight-worthy dunks in losing efforts are meritorious events. Helping matters for the Friars’ Jamine Peterson is our professed love for the alley-oop, especially those that go against convention.

In other news, how good is Syracuse?

Kenpom likes them, and if you enjoy statistical conclusions that go beyond the typical points-per-game categories, it’s hard to argue with the logic. Looking at their RPI, you see the Orange have the second-hardest schedule, and their 22-1 record clearly demonstrates their regular season excellence.

Of course, a simple glance at Jim Boeheim’s roster reveals some high-grade talent. Players like Wesley Johnson, Kris Joseph, and Brandon Triche are bona-fide, (or up-and-coming, anyway) studs.
